You're welcome, it's tough to find something in that range with a manual that doesn't feel like a tin can.
I think the Golf, STi or Evo, would be a downgrade for you. They are tarted up economy cars (no offense to anyone here who owns one!). The Mustang has a good chassis, but I understand your thoughts on the more basic models. I'm not sure I'd be happy with a 4cyl turbo Mustang either. The only draw there would be a brand new car with today's most current tech.
I also searched on BMW manuals nationwide with less than 45k miles and less than $35k asking price. There are a few more hits on that one, including a 435 and an M240i. Neither looked brilliant in the pics (more wear than I expected), but gives an idea on what might be available as you look.

And the same thing with Audi... https://tinyurl.com/bmwmanualtransunder35k
If you don't mind going a little older, something like this S5 manual could be fun - https://tinyurl.com/2013S5manualtrans - Clean Carfax one owner with 40k miles

I'm suggesting a fun to drive convertible with a manual transmission. It can probably server your daily needs, even those you don't know you have, better than any thing else. Your preaching about the values of a manual come even more into play in a vehicle like this plus you have a greater amount of places you can go that you may have never experienced before. With a vehicle like this there is really no place you can't go. It can make you a better driver. Want a kayak or a mountain bike strapped on the roof ...done. Remove the hard top while it's there ...also done. I know you think you know what you want, but I wanted to offer a different option that may be more fun at more places. Here is just a sample of the reviews since the first ones are now in owners hands. I've owned and have driven some serious performance cars. I think I would enjoy this more than those in more places. Plus it is a Swiss Army Knife of a vehicle. You can configure it different nearly everyday of the week if you want. The other thing that comes with a vehicle like this is you can pretty much invent where you want to enter or exit places or you can blast down a very imperfect gravel or dirt and mud road. You can also go through about three feet of standing water. Road trips don't need roads. For the guy who likes to change things up including a Natos I was considering a bit more than just one dimension.

How often do you do those things? My guess is that less than 1% of people take their SUVs off paved roads. Like most cars/trucks/SUVs/motorcycles, it's marketing.
I think @Raza point is that for the 99% of paved adventures most people have, cars > SUV/trucks.
Plus, isn't it more fun to take something off road that wasn't meant to be off road?

Not for me plus the ability to go through deep water is a great advantage 6-8 months a year if it's raining a good deal. Depending on the amount of rain some reasonably often traveled roads here have had 18-24 inches of water or more quite often. I realize he does not live here, but it can be encountered anywhere. The bigger reason for the recommendation is I went more places and didn't have to compromise what I brought when I had the Jeep or the Truck. Road trips were far more fun compared to those in the cars. All my other convertibles or sports cars are nothing but compromise including seating position. I'm not willing to do that anymore and I like having whatever I think I may need with me. I also enjoyed being able to go to some of the trail areas on weekends that they will not allow the car to go. Having grow up around various areas of PA there are several areas close by where this will be the better vehicle even in an everyday environment.

I mean, I live in a major city and I don’t even walk on grass if I can avoid it. Suffice it to say, a car like the Ford Bronco is interesting, but not what I’m looking for in a daily driver. As for the compromise in space/comfort/etc, despite the way I talk sometimes, I’m still a fairly young guy and prefer a firmer, sportier suspension. If I want cushy, I’ll order an Uber Black, you know?

Too big and too expensive, plus I worry about someone with my skin tone saying that I have an M4 in public (M4 being the military version of a very popular assault rifle). I briefly considered an E90/E92 M3, but I don’t think I want to go for a car that old. They’re barely newer than my Z4.
