I would pass. Rotary engines get pretty crappy milage and you had to rev the piss out of this to get it to move. This one seemed to spend a lot of time at the dealer. My good friend had one when I had my TT back in 2003 and it would spin out in 90 degree turns where my TT (Quatro) was on rails when we would race home from work. The only plus was it had a back seat...sort of.

I think your friend might not be a very good driver. The RX-8 is very sharp--around the Top Gear test track as fast as its contemporaries, the much more powerful 350Z and E46 M3. Yes, you have to rev it, but it's always more fun to work for it. TTs are fun than people give them credit for, but in capable hands, an RX-8 should leave one behind.

What would you get for... 3k gbp? Ideally something fast and with 4 seats...

Not sure you can do better. It's practically a sedan; I sat my 6'3" friend behind me in one and he was fairly comfortable for a short period of time.

If I saw the value in fixed roof RWD cars, I would totally buy one.

Sure. A gentleman farmer's car. Perfect for a day at the races, or driving down to Reims and returning with a bootful of Taittinger.

Gravitas but no showing off, as befits a gentleman.

I was there back in the day working in behind the scenes in an area of British Leyland land, when those were getting old, Triumph Stag's and TR7's were new, and the new Rover kid on the block was the SD1

Mine's the Healey. I...must...have...one! After reading about them, I'd really like the 100/4 over the more popular 3000. But I'd also take a Sprite or two.

My favorite British car is really hard for me to decide but I think I'd go for an MG R-Type Midget



The Morgan Aeromax, Bentley 4 1/2 litre blower and original Jag S-Type are close favorites though.

It's a tough question, no doubt. I think my favorite is the 1970s/80s Aston Martin V8 Vantage.
