So, you guys know that I'm nuts for a manual transmission. But even still, I'm looking to add an SUV to the stable for next year, so that means that manuals are out of the question, since manual SUVs basically don't exist in the US. My current top choice is the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Pretty little thing. I just built one, loaded it up, and it was $48,545, with about $5600 in options on the middle model. Not too bad. A comparable BMW 328xi wagon (the only way an automatic and AWD BMW 3 is acceptable to me) is $57,470. No wonder everyone is buying SUVs now. More practical and cheaper.
The base on that 3 series $42,650, by the way. $13,825 in options, thanks to options packages that nest options packages (i.e., if you want Estoril Blue, it comes with the $3100 M Sport pack--a pack I'd want anyway--but they charge then an extra $550 for Estoril Blue. And for the M Sport Pack, it doesn't include the $700 adaptive M suspension, so you have to add that as well; let's not forget that the $800 lighting package automatically includes the $1700 premium package) and sometimes put them together in strange ways. And after all that, they still charge $150 for wheel locks. That all adds up to nearly $60,000 on a midrange engine BMW 3 series. Remember when these cost about half that and came with 6 cylinders?

Even going liberally with the Audi Q5 3.0 (not the 2.0, which is more comparable to the other two), it's only $52K and change.

Personally I'd take the Audi over the Land Rover. More reliable, if also more sterile and Teutonic.

More reliable is questionable, in my opinion. Audis aren't infallible. I love them, but they're far from perfect. The Land Rover is a new model, but won't be by the time I buy. Also, I don't plan on keeping either past the warranty period and neither would be my main transportation, so reliability is less of a concern.
