How do you identify if a case is any good when it looks like this?

Only you can make that decision based on your ability, or willingness, to spend time cleaning the case.
I would suggest that you give that one a miss and wait for a better example to appear.

The 66-8050 was made for a long time I think. So now at least I've got the name of a case to enquire after when I find a Seiko hoarder to direct enquires at.

Well my question is: is there a vendor somewhere with a big pile of Seiko cases and a big pile of Seiko dials, in reasonable condition, to whom I can make enquiries. I'm really good at (a) writing emails (b) making PayPal payments.
