Lovely car, but vandalised.

It’ll be interesting to see what this goes for—I feel like they tend to go at a higher value than they’re worth because of the Cobra connection, but when it comes right down to you, you’re putting yourself in a car, your life in its hands, so to speak, and it’s been built by a random person under unknown conditions and it’s a big risk. It’s a major reason I’ve never really considered looking at a secondhand one compared to a sports car from a real company, built in a factory, not a shed, by trained workers, and not someone doing it after work while having a few beers.

When I had my Lotus, I had some custom painting done on some interior parts, including the shroud around the a/c controls. When they took it apart, they found one side had a one inch screw with two washers, and the other side had a two inch screw with a whole bunch of washers. We also found a beer bottle cap wedged underneath the shifter boot.![]()

Ironically, despite those foibles, I had the Lotus for nine years and it was extremely reliable (albeit only driven 3k miles per year). Part of that was undoubtedly the Toyota drivetrain, but even there, I had an aftermarket supercharger on it with no issues at all. And it was driven "very briskly" on numerous occasions, including a couple of stints on track.
Oh, I wasn’t kidding. I have no worries about Lotus reliability after the switch to Toyota powertrains. I mean, what in an Elise is even left to go wrong? The off the shelf Blaupunkt head unit? Boohoo, pull it out and put a new one in. I would buy a modern Lotus without hesitation.
