Well, that is great for them, but to me, it's like identifying everything by the UPC code. It kind of takes the special things about a car out of the picture. If an eight-digit number is the best way to identify a car, is it really that special? If I'm restoring a car, the serial number is critical to ensure originality, but I don't need to memorize it. Some changes, like Porsche 911s moving from air to liquid-cooled or Corvettes from front to mid-engine are significant. Most 911 new models are things like reconfigured headlights, a two mm longer rear side window, a brake light bar that extends across the car instead of separate right and left lights, and a reflash of the EFI to gain a few more hp. For the most part they don't change the car enough that most people can see the difference. I'm not even clear half the time about what brand we're talking about, given the number of designations that begin to sound the same. From what I can tell, this is a practice that came about in the past ten years in publications. I don't see it as an improvement. As someone who has worked in tech for the past 35 years, code names and numbers actually lead to a good deal of internal confusion. On the other extreme take the EV Hummer, which took the code name too seriously and yielded a ridiculous interior for over $100K vehicle.

. When you say value I know your car was preowned. Are you comparing it preowned to new for the hatch? The BWM new would be $30K-45K more than the golf new, and yours is not AWD. Having a new car warranty is important to people. I'm not in love with the Golf, but the new BMW is cost-prohibitive for what it is (a small with little utility), or if preowned, no warranty is on the BMW. That said, the inline six is by all measures a better engine to the I4 with gobs of power. Sacrificing the warranty on the VW and 5K-6K in parts and tuning will yield something equal to or more powerful than the BMW that will have AWD. I've ridden and driven in this beast and it is extremely good. I find it an interesting dilemma.

. Can't say I've seen that. I looked back at some 2009 Car and Driver and Motor Trend magazines articles I have on the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, and there is a brief reference to a 997-911, but it almost appears to be a typo which is why I missed it. Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet appears about 40 times in the MT article, but 997-911 appears once. Yes, a bit of a hoarder; I have magazines with articles for every car I have owned and the sales brochure for all bought new and quite a few that were not. I'll also note that at least at Champion Porsche if you tell them your car is a 997 -911 they will ask you for the full model name Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet to look up parts.. That was the practice through 2014. I was feeing better know that the as tested price of the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet in the article was less than $90K. Wish they were there now.
