I think power is addictive and the above comes from people racing Miata's,and the Toyota/Subaru BRZ that can easily have a lot more power. Yes, you can learn to drive better in these cars as is, but at some point you stop learning things when you run out of power. Gearing also has a lot to do with it. For some reason the Germans seem to understand how to gear a car better than anyone else. They can give up 100 hp to other cars and still be faster/quicker.

For Geoff, my neighbor has a tuned GTI Golf (Or what ever they call the hot version these days). It makes over 560bhp, (per the dyno), has pizza pie pan size six piston brembo brakes, three piece wheels, Pilot sport cup 2 tire, tuned suspension (That still rides nice), 6speed (M) with AWD for probably thousands less than your BMW. It could easily go 150bhp more, but this keeps it reliable. It's not C7 Z06 thrust, but very few things hit as hard as those do. The fun is getting there yourself and personalizing your car. I think Walter's Jetta is a bit less, but is probably still a missle. If I can convice my wife into a new lexus GX then I want to build one of these VW. I would do the Honda, but I prefer the AWD that you can't get in it. You need it for the rain here.

A Triumph 2500S. Not that actual car but one identical.

It was at the Bristol Classic Car Show in 1995 where there was one for sale. It was immaculate and I'm not exaggerating; pretty much perfect from bumper to bumper. Had a very lengthy chat with the guy selling it (whose name I cannot remember ) and it was obvious he didn't want to sell it, but a case of 'needs must'. He had 4 'swollen' A4 folders of pictures (pre-digital photos), receipts, paperwork, etc. of what had been done to it; all of which he'd done himself. Looked like it had just come out of the showroom, only better. All the 'known' mods and upgrades had been done so would have been more than capable in 'modern' traffic.
Anyhoo.... I had the money and was about a twitch away from a handshake when reality kicked me in the soft bits: I had nowhere to keep it.
My single garage was occupied by another Triumph which I wouldn't sell, and there's no way I'd have left either of them out on the street. Bristol was a bit of a hot spot for car crime back then and renting secure storage was a bit too pricey for me. Gutted.

Of course, it depends on the car, but some of the most powerful cars I’ve ever driven (Merc AMGs, Ferrari even) are also some of the most boring. All speed, no sensation. Sure, taking a car like the MX-5 or BRZ and giving it a bit more oomph isn’t a bad thing, but, for me, power is one of the last things I look at when considering a car.

Oh man, I have a story like that. A local Porsche dealer had for sale on its lot a 1983 911SC, basically identical to this one:

Size: 133.9 KB

5 speed manual and everything. The dealer wasn’t selling it, but they were letting one of their salesmen sell it from their lot privately.

He listed it at $12,500. Offered it to me at $11,500 after a blistering drive down some backroads. I’m confident I could have gotten him down further, maybe to 10.5 or even 10.

I didn’t have the money, I was in college and just had enough to cover my Jetta’s payments and living expenses. I went to my father, who had previously offered to buy me a new car and then reneged which is what prompted me to buy my Jetta in the first place, and I asked him to borrow the money instead of gift it and I’d pay him back once I finished college. He refused.

The one pictured sold recently for $58,500. A couple similar ones are for sale on CarGurus for $69,000 and $79,000.

$11,500. It makes me so mad. That was a forever car and I missed out on it. That’s a car I’d be handing down to future generations if I had it.

^^^ The like is for the story, not for the missed opportunity.

That’s silly talk. While I never found a Mercedes I would call interesting (well maybe the F1 car), competent I would be more accurate, and I’ve drive many of the most potent ones. My Ferrari experience is only three and all were a blast. All three Z06 (C6-8) were also a total blast to drive.

Then there was my 911 Carrera 4S Cab which was a great car when you used it for what it was meant for. Otherwise it was just too good that made it was boring. The Jaguar F types was interesting that the Supercharged V8 was not in the mix when the car was designed. It totally messed up the car, but most of the car mags always took the V8 and complained about the handling. If they took the Supercharged V6 type S bought the $100 crank pulley and the reflash you get an extra 100 HP for 530 total. This thing was a scalpel that was hard to not love. When HP can be added and act like it was meant to be there you just want more.

So for me power seems to be a theme to cars I enjoy. I don’t think I would enjoy the cars that didn’t have the power.

Dunno about silly talk, but when I added a supercharger to my Lotus back in the day, it transformed the car. Without it, it was a fun car, but you needed constant high revs to get the most out of it. Adding the supercharger also flashed the processor to lower the second cam onset from 6000 to 4000 rpm, in addition to increasing HP by around 50%. All of a sudden there was not only far more power, but power was available everywhere in the rpm range. Sure, it was fun without the supercharger, but it was way more fun with it.

Yes I like revving things. Jason kamissa in a little honda (kei car or something with a k series small bore 4 banger I think) revving and rowing through the gears made me think that looks more fun than 10% throttle on a veyron.
