Do you have room for squat stands at home? I used them for years before I built a proper gym in the house. They store in a small footprint, but allow squatting and benching in a rack. I have squatted over 500lbs out of them and we use a similar setup for competitions, where guys are squatting over 1000lbs. They are less stable than a rack, but generally less expensive and more versatile. I use mine outside when the weather is nice, too.

This will teach you to sit back and lean against your posterior chain vs sitting forward in the movement. Most people feel like they are going to fall over backwards the first time they properly squat, you need to work to fight the natural urge to sit forward to counteract that natural reaction. A proper low bar setup for the squat can help with the tendency to move forward in the squat, too.
I've been squatting for 20 years bro!

I was uselessly pontificating about the general statement that squats help me squat. Squatting is good, but most people can't do it right and doing it too much (or incorrectly) can cause overuse injuries.

That's one of my friends, I squat in Chucks. I also use Olympic lifting shoes for a variation in my form/high bar squatting, but I don't like the tendency I have to sit forward at the bottom of the movement when using the higher heeled shoes. I used to DL in socks until I started competing. They do not allow it in the USPA where I have competed, so I got used to just wearing Chucks for everything.

    Here's a max effort 227.5kg comp squat with knee wraps - https://youtu.be/ONF0AAmVUMM?t=25

    Only wrist wraps

As far as shoes, really anything that gives you a grippy inner and outer sole with no compression is good.

It's a good solution for portability. Check out the folding racks if you have a dedicated space. I'll post a couple links later.

I was in seriously good shape when I was in my 30s. I worked as a personal trainer, so I was constantly at the gym and randomly lifting, and I was running marathons; fastest of 3:27:54 at Twin Cities (Minneapolis, MN). My weeky mileage was hitting the 70s and I used to run 10-12 miles pushing a stroller. I'm 5'10", weighed 165, and my body fat was 7%. My abs are still rock solid, it's just they're hidden by a layer of fluff. I still have my pecs.

Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
