(but I would think the soreness is a sign of successful working out, no?) Anyhoo, how important is rest for muscle growth? Can you harm growth with too much of a good thing?

Correct food and rest are as important as good training. Constantly training the same muscles each day will result in overtraining.
Training breaks down muscle tissue, growth results from the repair process which also brings increases in strength. Failing to allow the muscles to repair themselves will only take you backwards.

Someone one said "there is no such thing as over training, just under resting'. Muscles grow outside of the gym etc. Further to recent bits I've read and your advice Scott I think I'll stick to 5 days a week instead of 6.

I have a cold at the moment so I'm staying away. Probably need a week off every 6 or so anyway.

Gym this morning. Got a pre-workout workout by digging my car out from under the snow, then weights and 5 km on the treadmill.

Chest, triceps, shoulders today. Now for some Christmas shopping before it's too late!

It was one of those days...every weight felt twice as heavy, legs felt like lead, couldn't wait to get out of there. Must be coming down with something.

I had reason to be - it was an excellent session. I was worried after a week off, needlessly, it seems.

Just about to start a workout. Not really excited, but those are the times to push through. So, I shall report back. Usually days like this the weights feel 100X heavier. We shall see.

edit: ok, did pull-ups, barbell rows, dumb bell rows, bicep curls, hammer curls. Tomorrow is 'push' day. Ate absolutely horribly this past 4 days. Too much Christmas cheer going around. Time to tighten up the nutrition again.

Note: proper, dead-hang, non-kipping pull-ups are a great way to make one feel very weak and discouraged. Tough, man. Tough.

Yeah man - I can't do pullups to save my life. Well, I can do like 4.
