Why not? A friend of mine who has done a lot of road racing including being involved with Toyota's Supra World Challenge team. He said that driving a last generation Viper on the track is like driving a fast powerful Miata with a truck transmission.

You probably like their quirky English ways and bad teeth. It's not so much them I dislike actually, it's how the show became not a car show and how they (inevitably had to) become characatures of themselves. And how Clarkson later didn't give car specs "it's faster than the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse and has more power then the pope". I want the know the damn 0-60 and bhp...

Yeah Top Gear was a comedy show that featured cars.

But that being said anymore I could give a damn about specs any more. I would rather know how a car makes you feel behind the wheel then how quickly it can get to 60.

Truth. I test drove a polo gti (6.7 to 60) and a golf r (4.8?) and the polo felt faster.

Yeah... but the only way to do that, is to drive it yourself. The only automotive writer whose driving preferences and instincts were close enough to my own that began to trust his preferences was Peter Egan. And all that means is that we both like quirky british roadsters, and nicely handling but practical hatchbags and wagons.

OH, and just in relation to our earlier conversation about V8 Miatas...

Have you seen Flyin' Miata's V8 Exocet?

Just looked it up... I'd seen it before. But it always comes as a bit of a shock. Talk about minimalism... it's basically an Ariel Atom with fewer creature comforts. Or a demonic Lotus 7. Neither of which are unappealing options.

Nah.... I've watched them a few times. They're OK.

I'd take Alain De Cadenet or Peter Egan over them any day of the week.
