As a diesel driver, I'm now starting to wonder if there are any immediate dangers in driving these cars, given that they pollute more than they say. For example, as a driver, am I at risk breathing these noxious fumes in the cabin on a daily basis, say through the heater vent? Sometimes, I feel like I can smell something coming through, though not sure what. Or when I roll down the window to stick my head out of the window to back out of my steep, long twisty driveway. Am i being paranoid?
I had my reservations going diesel, one of them being that in America they only come in Auto trans, the Audis anyway, but I was skeptical about how clean it was also. Ultimately I decided that the gas mileage and the engine life were worth the other minor shortcomings...BUT...now, it just leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
You're being paranoid lol
Any fumes you might smell are more likely to be from the car in front (just select re-circ for a while if that's the case)
Don't forget the exhaust outlet is at the back so it's highly unlikely it's your car's fumes you're smelling, unless exhaust manifold area is leaking.
Just a shame noxious exhaust fumes(for the most part at least ) aren't visible, if we all belched a visible smoke out we'dall be complaining about every car out there lol
A leaking hose would just emit engine crankcase fumes (at best, if you were reallu unlucky and no huge volumes) , not as really nasty as pure exhaust, but again the vast majority would get quickly sucked out through the bottom of the engine bay whilst under way.
Also, It would have to be forward of the cabin air intake (which is usually ahead of the engine), very little else could seep through any other way via the fire wall/bulkhead

If VW could have hit emissions targets without blowing performance with a "software update", they'd have sorted it out before selling the car in the first place. Call me skeptical, but I think that they're palming everyone off at the moment in the hope of a miraculous R&D leap.
