to be honest it shows how talented and ingenious Volkswagon backroom boys are - it won't stop people buying the product in the long term

Or this just goes to show why diesels are terrible.

Please to explain why you consider diesels to be terrible...

I drove a 220d and did not like the power delivery or engine note one bit. Surely petrols are nicer, mpg disregarded?

The power delivery is certainly different as diesels generally deliver more torque but less bhp.
Personally I enjoy the 2nd and 3rd gear grunt of a good diesel engine rather than a ridiculously oversized petrol.

So mpg/economy aside you prefer diesel?

    Smelly, noisy, doesn't rev.

And I have driven modern VW diesels.

I like a motor that redlines at least 8K rpm.

Yeah, the A3 is the first diesel I've had, and it was quite different to what I was used to from a power delivery standpoint, though I will say they do have torque and I have no issues accelerating when needed. This is also my first auto transmission from Audi (my previous two were MT), and there's a bit of a delay after stepping on the gas. That's my biggest annoyance.

I don't find it to be noisy (though sound a bit like a tractor at idle) or smelly at all, but yeah, no revs.

All that was just fine with me for the mpg we get (mid to high 30s around town and 42+ on the highway 80mph ish), and the thought that is was clean. All in all the car has been great, nice interior, looks sharp, drives nice (though different as I mentioned) and accelerates fine for daily driving. I have my weekend toy for high revs and horsepower.
