Oh no, I'm definitely a hunter. Not good at gathering things. The killing part I can do, but the cleaning part I'm no good at.

I've heard making seitan at home is an arduous process. It looks like it turned out very well.

Field dressing is an acquired taste, the more you do it..the easier/faster it becomes. It amazes how some people think the store bought chicken, was born with plastic wrapping on it(instead of feathers).

So, they get hunted when their population gets to be particularly troublesome, and I must say that wild hogs are a delicacy. The same goes for venison -- fresh venison is an incredible treat, fried in the southern style.
The hog population is becoming a major problem, they do a lot of damage...and destroy natural food sources for native species of animals. They get huge, almost turn into Russian Boars..with an attitude to match. If you fall in a pen with big pigs, they will eat you azz...no kidding. That's how they used to dispose of bodies(Chinatown, mob, etc), throw them in the pen, and gone in 2 hours. Wild hogs are great table fare, on a spit over a fire...or wrapped in wet banana leaves & buried in coals, all great.

I give all my venison away every year, usually 3-4 deer between states(sometimes 5-6 based on tag allocations). I give my meat to homeless shelters & sportman foundations that donate to the needy. I pay to have it butchered & processed(cut/wrapped), then donate it to the best situation(based on my location). It makes me feel good, giving to those in need...and heck I even get a tax voucher/write off for the donation.

I've never eaten cooked venison. Only tartare. It was delicious.

Better that I'm selective harvesting, than cars hitting them...its an slow ugly death, plus the car passengers are obviously in danger.

I actually like the meat, but traveling with the meat on extended trips is difficult.. Plus the wife won't touch it, she sees Rudolph with every bite
