    Can anyone explain how chicken and waffles became a "thing"? Heard of it (rarely), a local club downtown has it for brunch on the weekends. Keep meaning to go down there and try it...

    Since at least 1988. At least that's when I became aware of them.

    I was surprised KFC went in this direction. Reminded me of Burger King's the King character, which they retired after realizing that that kind of character eventually pigeon holes a brand. But...the King is back, surprisingly.

    It is a mainstay in the South and I think it really caught on a few years ago when some of the more recognized chefs started to pay attention to it.

    With maple syrup and smooth texture of the waffles combined with the saltiness and crunch of the chicken, it is really a unique taste, IMHO.

    Don't eat them often, but if done right, very delicious.
