Hey, don't bad-mouth Riesling. Unless it's from Mosel, then go ahead

For a very long time the only German wines readily available in the UK were very cheap semi-sweet whites, either labelled Hock and Liebfraumilch. Since the rise of rose (and the death of half their market) they've slunk into obscurity.

Speaking of Mosels, I'm going to presume that you've never had a Bernkasteler Doctor Auslese, if that's your estimation of them....

Ok. I lived two years in Rheinland-Pfalz and really got to see what Germany has to offer in terms of white wine. There's some great stuff being produced. Liebfraumilch not being part of that.

I stay away from most Riesling produced in the mosel Valley since its all rather sweet. But Pfalz or Rheingau that's where the good stuff is.

There's probably some nice ones from mosel as well. But with limited resources and when not having opportunity to sample before it's a guideline that's served me well

Actually think I've had the spätlese which was OK but nothing special. Not tried the auslese

Although its not the most complex of wines, my favourite Mosel has always been Piesporter Goldtropfchen (?sp) - at only Spatlese level, NOT auslese - the balance of the racy limey acidity and the honeyed sweetness is just utterly delicious. A difficult bottle to share.

So, I've read 50 pages in this thread today. Passed out few times of exaltation, cried few times from my memories, gained 16 lbs looking at your pictures. It was very interesting read, thank you, guys, keep'em coming!
