Someone said that waitrose has a foreign foods section that's actually really cheap - 200g or cumin for the price of 50 from schwartz or something. I can't verify, but might be worth a look.

I think the mainstream supermarkets on the whole massively mark up 'luxury' items eg loose tea, ethnic food, spices
Buying them in places where that's just what people eat, eg Chinese and Asian supermarkets, Lidl for European staples like wine, olive oil, you can get quality at great prices

One of the guys at work is married to a Chinese lady and he have me some green tea which is just beautiful

In all supermarkets you can find ethnic sections where bags of spices are cheaper than the 35g jars of Schwartz, yeah.
