They are. I understood your "or 59" quote to be in reference to this fact; playing off of Mark's "1 click" idea.

Correct!
Anyway - the new gmt is 12 - or is it 24 - clicks? Bi directional?

Not a Zombie
Funny thing though I almost always rotate mine counterclockwise like any other watch. I actually did not realize it was bidirectional until my daughter (to my horror) twisted it the other way! and its 120 clicks (just tested)

Look at the wealth of knowledge that IWL is. Admittedly there's a lot of drivvle to trawl through first, but we get there eventually.

Ohhh man....these GMT photos are giving me a serious case of the regrets! When I bought my Explorer II, the shop also had two GMTs for sale: a GMT-Master from 1967 and a GMT-Master II, late 70/early 80s era.
I chose the Explorer for several reasons, but every time I see GMT pics like the beautiful ones here, I kind of wish I'd have purchased the GMT instead....
Eterna | Tudor | Seiko | Casio | G-Shock | Orient | Swatch | Mondaine | Zodiac (pre-Fossil) | Rolex | Wenger | Pulsar Time Computer | Omega | Timex | Bucherer | Citizen | Bulova | Glycine

You can always get one later - they're not particularly difficult to find - and keep the Explorer.
