Not actually listening to it because it’s only just in my hands as a birthday present from my nephew. It’s an unusual trio of saxophone, piano and cello.

I haven’t heard anything by her, just read reviews - but how can you not be intrigued by Mette Henriette?

Never been a huge fan of Kennedys, but have listened to them a fair bit in im my teens. I was more into Husker Du and Replacements, and from Britain my groups were Clash and The Jam.

To be honest I was more into experimental / industrial and improv jazz, but I liked good tight songwriting, and Bob Mould always had a smart thing going. The DKs were just good local political rabble-rowsers. Jello was funny and quick. This show was super friendly, with a cool vibe until a wannabe skinhead came into the middle and tried to start a mean-spirited mosh (people would usually just do the friendly shoulder bonking.) This guy started swinging his fists and legs high with Doc Martins intended to hit a face. Jello stopped the music, looked the guy straight in the eye, and said "Hey, we have a new song for you guys. It's called Nazi Punks, F%^# Off!, you in in the middle, time to cool it." It worked. Very smart crowd control.

Do you like the bagpipes? Do you like traditional bagpipe songs that are rocked up and modernized? Do you like Metallica set to bagpipes? Metallica does! Truth be told, bagpipes work for a lot of iconic guitar songs: Free Bird, Sweet Child O’ Mine, Crazy Train. It was a very fun set.

Check her out. I think you’ll be impressed.

    She’s brilliant. Still bagpipes, though.

Weekend in Helsinki. First burgers and beer with an old army buddy in a brewery restaurant, they had nice Marble Bitter.

Then some live music. One of my old favourites got back together and made an excellent album after 17 year hiatus.

Now taking the tube back to hotel with backstage souveniers.

    Cheers, M

My college roommate and close friend is a bagpiper.

I rejoiced the day he got an electronic bagpipe. Played it through his headphones.

I like the bagpipes. There, I said it! I actually do like the bagpipes but this was the first time I've made the effort to listen to it. Which is to say, I don't listen to a lot of bagpipe. It's such an intriguing sound to me, though. I feel the same way about the bassoon. I don't hear the bagpipes that often, so it feels kind of special.

Out and about today at my local jazz club amongst the tarry ropes and fish boxes at Hastings.

Nigel Price in an organ trio. Mainstream excellence. He had a stand-in on organ, someone I’d never heard of. He was brilliant! Looking him up during the interval - currently in Manu Katché’s band, world tours, recently worked with Sting, Peter Gabriel, piano tutor at the Royal College of Music. Oh, right… It’s great that these people drive down from London to play in the function room of a sea-angler’s clubhouse for what - £150? Love ‘em. Proper, committed musicians.
