My first football hero, dating from around 1963, and my first hero of anything. A boy in the playground told me that Denis Law was the greatest footballer in the world, and I believed him, with all the certainty of an 8 year-old. I can still remember where we were standing. I became a Denis Law supporter, and because he had recently signed for Manchester United, that made me a Manchester United supporter as well. He was the most expensive footballer in the world at the time - at £115.000. He would have been as outstanding today, hardly having to adjust to the modern game.
I saw him play, and I saw him score. I could hardly believe that was him, out in the green pitch in the red shirt. Even as an adult there would sometimes be a catch in my voice as I said his name.
He was probably the first player to celebrate a goal. Up to then players simply walked back to the centre circle, maybe receiving a handshake. Denis Law wheeled away, one finger pointing to the sky.
An irrepressible character and ‘The King’. Thank you, Denis.

I remember reading that he initially had to hide the fact that he was in a rock band from his mother. He said he was teaching them.

Yes. He didn't want his parents to think he was "wasting" his music education by playing rock & roll.
