no think it from a famous French born American ? who in the fifties/sixties did a lot of monochrome pics of motor racing and planes I think

actually think just French the American bit if I remember right was to do with something to do with a American museum just can't remember what ...

useless info : he was the first French photograph to donate all his rights to his photos to the French government.

I don't know why, but pictures of these skinny tired cars have the wheels looking more oval than circular. I doubt they distorted this much at speed, but it really adds to the perception of high velocity. Most likely an optical illusion.

That has to do with the camera type and shutter, I believe. Similar to today's digital cameras with rolling shutter issues.
