First Backpacking Trip in 15 or so years.

This is the flashlight I recently bought (sorry for the tardiness, it was on sale for $70 just a couple days ago). I love it. It’s light, it clips, it has a magnet at the bottom so you can stick it to things, three intensities, 5mW green laser, and a black light. I’ve owned it for months and I’ve only had to charge it once despite using it everyday. Not for a long time everyday, but still.

When I was a young Boy Scout 15-20 years ago light was always a deficiency. We live in a golden age for that tech as well.

Due to dryness and weather conditions there was a campfire ban there. We had mini stoves to boil water for food and my friends lantern served as our fire.

We’re planning on getting a professional print of this and a couple other photos to remember the occasion.

I cannot overstate how secluded and serene this campsite felt. (Even if we still had cell service. )


This photo was taken by me, sitting in the entrance of my tent. The tent pictured is about 5 feet in front of a cliff that’s about 15 feet strait down into the river. To the left off picture, there’s a little spring fed stream that drains into the river. We had ice cold fresh water (filtered with my Grayl) for drinking and cooking.




Eric brought along Rue, his chihuahua. She did fantastic on the trail, especially when we ran into a few people on horseback.



This is sort of a reverse of the first image. Taken from in front of Eric’s tent. Visible is my tent on the right, Gabe’s further up, and Gabe with his chair that I was super jealous of. He had also brought along a hammock that is just visible in front of his tent.

We all napped a bit once camp was setup, and Eric being properly bushed stayed back at camp with Rue while Gabe and I went and did an additional 3’ish mile loop.

Both days we were able to spot Bald Eagles hunting the river back (with a careful eye on Rue) and the owls the night of were the absolute worst neighbors ever. Holy crap were they loud.

We chose the longer, harder route for day one, and the somewhat easier shorter route day two. I learned a lot, namely how much stuff I packed I didn’t need, and things I’m planning on buying for next time.

Gabe is already making noises about another trip, some multiple day “continental divide loop”.
