I love the Bulgari case but the dial has incipient cataracts. I realise I’m alone in thinking this, so please ignore if you have one.

The octagon within a circle has never worked for me. The eight sides look like they’re crowding into the space and obscuring it. Shadow heightens the effect. That’s not how cataracts develop, I grant you…

Yup. Both of them.
I’m thinking of buying another quite boring watch right now, as it happens.

Boring watches are the best. I wish I loved Alain silverstein etc but I do not.

I like Silberstain's approach, but some of his designs are a bit too childish. They all seem to fall into one of two categories: awesome or awful.
Once in awhile you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

I want a Silberstein, probably one of the Erard collaborations, and I have loved the silly childlike designs ever since I first saw them. What keeps me from buying? It used to be the thickness and also the price. But the real issue is the "stamped metal toy" quality of the hands. I owned another grail watch for several years that I eventually sold at a good profit - the Citizen Astrodea - and what finally led me to dislike the watch was the stamped metal toy qualities of the dial (It had very complex printing of the night sky, but it still had that stamped-tin feel like a mid-60s Japanese robot toy.) I still might break down and try a Silberstein design, but sometimes just one visual memory can wreck it. And yeah, watches are toys, I'm a big kid inside.
Too many watches, not enough wrists.
