Last night our friends invited us over for another epic food and wine get-together.
He was a wine merchant and has a crazy cellar.
I think we all agreed that the best of these was the Saffredi super-Tuscan, Cab-Merlot-Petit Verdot.

Looks great - I love wine, but I'm so glad I'm not into fancy wine. My poor bank balance couldn't take it. I bought a 2013 (I think) bottle of sparkling from a local vineyard called Bolney. It was not pleasant. Then I bought a £12 bottle of prosecco. I prefer the £7 one, crisper. Happy days.

At home we typically drink Cotes du Rhone or similar very affordable yummy value wines. I have been lucky enough to have friends in and around the wine industry, used to help my winemaker friends on their bottling lines, and I used to write about wines (and also made wine myself for 10 years.) I don't care for the showy sort of collecting that one sees at the high-end. These particular friends offer an insight into what those stratospheric wines can deliver, without the very high price of entry, because he used to be able to buy these at industry discounts and cellared them while their prices went through the roof. He usually suggests that we avoid the temptation of pricing the wines that he opens for us, because he admits he wouldn't pay those prices now..

In Spain recently I saw some local wines that were 4 euros I think. Tried a bottle not expecting much. Was absolutely disgusting, spat it out and poured it down the drain.

This has been our preferred, affordable bubbly rosé lately. Enjoyed with lunch

In a blind taste test of 5 reds I've never tried I would bet good money I couldn't tell you the grape, region, or indeed country of a single one.

Same here lol. I have had $15 Malbecs I enjoyed just as much as a $50 Cab

Yeah for me if just luck if I like a bottle. I'll know if I like it if I try it again, and vice versa, but I do not bother checking grape, region, country.
