These were so close to being great. I know people wanted a V8, but it had over 253HP at a time that a base Boxster had 217 and an SLK had 185. So it wasn’t the power of the V6 that was the big issue. I don’t even think Chrysler had a suitable V8 at the time, unless they pulled some lump from their truck line.

No, I think the bigger issue was sluggish, dim witted, poorly mated 4 speed automatic. If they’d been able to mate a 6 speed manual to it, it would have been quicker and livelier and had some sports car cred the actual product never had.

Plymouth could have sourced from Daimler a suitable engine and manual transmission. The M113 5.4 liter would have been my pick heck even the Chrysler Crossfire was offered with a manual

Timing was off. The Prowler came out in 1997 originally, before the merger was finalized. The Crossfire came out in 2003 as a 2004 model year, and was just an SLK with a different body on it, right down to the engine and transmission. The base model had the SLK version of Benz’s corporate 3.2 V6 and the SRT had the SLK32 AMG’s supercharged V6.

By then, the Prowler would probably have been too far along and already written off as niche to try and improve. Who knows what physical limitations they might have been able to engineer around from scratch rather than trying to shoehorn a Mercedes engine and transmission in there. Even the SLK32’ engine would have been a big improvement and perhaps enough to make it more than a marginal success with the older cruising crowd. Because it doesn’t really matter if you never go over 20mph, if you can’t blow the doors off a car or two, it’s a poseur.

Well, they do say timing is everything, but it does seem there were a lot of missed opportunities not just with the Prowler, I guess Daimler was a little stingy sharing .....
