Any of you ever own a first gen 4.2L V8 Audi S5? Thinking about getting one. Apparently, the old 4.2L V8 had timing chain problems, but this one is a-OK (2008-2012).

No, but I used to have an S6 from that era with the V-10 in it. Kick-ass car...

V10s are weird. They never really caught on compared to the inherently balanced V8 or the more exotic V12. I mean, how many V10 cars can you think of? The Audi V10, which is essentially the Lamborghini V10, which was a fire hazard of Teslic proportions, then there’s the Dodge Viper, not exactly the picture of refined design (though that’s fine, Tom Morello taught us ugly sounds can still be great, just as rough, half-built shed cars can be wonderful in their own way). I wonder why we haven’t seen more V10s.

Obviously now we’re going to see less and less of anything over 6 cylinders, but that wasn’t the case for a long time.

    - Audi 5.2L NA V10 (S6)
    - Lambo 5.2L NA V10 (Gallardo)
    - Audi 5.2L TT V10 (RS6 Avant)
    - VW 5L TDI V10 (Toureg)
    - BMW S85 5L V10 (M5)
    - Dodge 8L+ V10 (Viper)

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

V10s sound epic. I actually don't like American v8 noises to be honest. Ferrari v8 yes.

Google reminded me of the Porsche Carrera GT that was a V10, too.

No, I think that was the later version, mine was conventional. A true sleeper.
