My girlfriend (and I, currently) live in a controlled parking zone. My car doesn't have a permit so it's parked miles away, and we use hers. It's a 2005 Toyot aygo 1.0. It has no air con, a driving position that makes you feel like you're sitting on the roof, and no rev counter weirdly. It's a bit slow, I mean an at least compared to my M4 (admittedly an unfair comparison but...) 2 things is does better than my car are steering and throttle response. I guess this is hydraulic PAS as opposed to electric? It's so sharp. And the throttle, presumably because it's naturally aspirated and not turbo, is so much better. I think I need something older in my garage.

There could be more than one reason for the difference. Drive by wire is a matter of programming, it’s perfectly possible to make response sharper or duller. Response in the analogue world can also be adjusted by mechanical means. I’ve noticed that small, relatively underpowered cars often are tweaked to have sharp, immediate response to give the impression of more power than they actually have.

Yes, get yourself a classic British roadster... A Sprite or something like that. Also be friends with a good mechanic.

Best solution aside from ditching the M4 and that pesky turbo lag.

Absolutely hit the nail on the head here. It’s a common tactic; sharp throttle response at the top of the pedal travel tricks people into thinking the car has a lot more pep than it really does.

I doubt they spent long trying to make a 1 litre shitbox feel sporty! That said, if it works, it works! My car is super quick but doesn't feel it, I'd prefer the vice versa.

I’ve been feeling for years that this is a nameplate that Volkswagen could bring back. Make it a smaller, sportier version of the Golf R or Audi TT, AWD and a manual, coupe shape, could be a real hit against cars like the 400Z, GT86/BRZ, and Supra.
