My mom only ate mushrooms raw. She hated them cooked.

Mushrooms are hardly alone. I wonder how many people died trying to eat cassava before they figured out how to extract the cyanide? Who figured out that callaloo was safe if you cooked it first? Who was the intrepid soul who said "Sure Groc die but if me cook..."?

Did some smoked ribs the other day. Got a couple quality Berkshire pork and smoked it over sweet maple and cherry wood chips. Turned out delicious

I want to know who the first person was to say "Let me smash this rock open and suck out the insides" and thus gave us the oyster.

Picked up some fresh grouper today so I made blackened grouper sandwiches with lettuce, tomato, and tartar sauce. Put it on a butter grilled Kaiser roll and had roasted asparagus on the side.

Last night's dinner, Vietnamese style salad and stir fried green beans - much of it from the garden. Skirt steak marinated in rice vinegar, sake, sugar, garlic and fish sauce. We grill it, and it lasts about four days in different dishes, cut up into little cubes. The salad has snap peas, mint, shiso, Thai basil, carrots, arugula and rau ram all from the garden, plus cucumber and cilantro. The dressing is lime juice, sugar, rice vinegar, fish sauce, ginger, and a squirt of Sriracha. This is probably my favorite way to eat steak - a rare treat for us (although I think my wife prefers hers with ketchup and roasted potatoes.)
