But electronics are electronics and that can't be circumnavigated.

What did the electronics do to hurt you? You can tell us, you're among friends.

Computers and phones just stop working over time, and can't be fixed. Carbs can.

Being British I understand your fear of electronics, Raza has no excuse.

Being able to cool the car down while it is over 100 degrees before I get in....priceless. And apple car play is a great feature. Blind spot monitoring is almost a must have especially the way people drive around here.

Lane keeping assist I can do without, 360 camera I don't need, 5 different driving modes is a bit of overkill. Just give me econ and sport if they provide a truly variable experience. And don't get me started with how annoying the engine auto-shutoff feature is....

I can't fault anything you've listed here. Agree !00%. I can't express how much I hate Auto stop and start. I made dam sure it was not in either of the two new cars we bought last year after having it in two previous cars. Now if you had to turn it on for it to work that would be different. I'd just glue the switch so it could never be turned on. Defaulting to on and not being able to program to disable was justification to sell the car in my mind. I don't want to hit the switch to disable every time I start the car. That and the older Mercedes electronics in her Infiniti (that temporarily became mine for a bit until the LC500 came in) that requires you to unlock the door before you pull the handle to get out. My older E-class was like that and it drove me crazy. I'm told that has changed in newer Mercedes, but why take a chance since they seem to like Auto start/stop also

I will note on some true performance cars having a couple levels of sport is needed. On the two F -Types it was nice to be able to cancel the open exhaust when the wife was in the car, or when coming home late into the neighborhood while keeping everything else in sport mode on. Now if I could only do that on my neighbors sons fart can Subaru WRX.
    Cheers,

That’s certainly not how my M-B works, if that helps.

I have to say also that because of the mild
hybrid system in mine, the 48V system makes the stop start almost completely unnoticeable. The car’s engine will actually shut down once you’re below 10mph or so (if your foot isn’t on the accelerator), and restarts with virtually no noise or vibration. Quiet and unobtrusive enough that I don’t bother defeating it.

I fear that soon enough it will be mandated in all cars...and not capable of being defeated...

Some brands of cars don't seem to have issues that others do with electronics. Not that they are not as sophisticated. They just don't break as often. Come to your own conclusion as to why.

As long as I've had friends with BMWs I've had all the reasons I need not to own one. All I ever hear about is how they are broken. I think my die hard BMW friend is waining some with his current 5 series. I can't remember in the last year the last time I've seen it for more than a day or two in his driveway. Always a loner vehicle from the dealer. Even those have broken.

That may be the day I have to consider an electric vehicle.

One of the good things about having an Audi is that there are a ton of online resources. I found an OBDII dongle and app where I was able to long code and shutoff the Auto Stop Start permanently .

I've had 2 BMWs. A 1985 318 I, probably the last of the basics, with 325,000 miles on it when I gave it away for a beer in a bar. A lovely piece of automotive engineering.
Next was a new lease, a 2005 I 325 convertable that was had so many little annoyances that I dumped the lease and bought a used 05 Mercedes C320 that was ok for a local driver but was horrible if you had to sit in it for more than 2 hours.

As to the '85 318, I have a pretty strange story of a concentration camp survivor, a midnight run across Florida, and my choice of automobiles.
