The C8 is a dual clutch not an automatic. Which is a manual trans with an electronically controlled clutch.

Exactly why is it not a Corvette? If you want to get technical any Corvette with a V8 and not a Blue Flame six is not a real Corvette using this logic. I think Chevy decides what is and is not a Corvette. It still Americas sports car which seems to be the main requirement to be a Corvette. It sure looks like a Corvette.

Dual clutch is an automatic. They even describe it as an automatic. It shifts by itself, therefore it is automatic; any argument otherwise is simply incorrect. There are sequential manuals that are not automatic, but to my knowledge, they have never been fitted to a production car, only race cars and motorcycles.

    From Car and Driver:
TRANSMISSION 8-speed dual-clutch automatic with manual shifting mode

    From Motor Trend:
A standard eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is paired with the LT2

    From Road and Track:
The C8 is the first Corvette to offer a dual-clutch automatic, an eight-speed unit designed by Tremec.

So let's just be honest, play no games, and all admit that it's an automatic.

It's not a Corvette because if Ford came out and said the next F-150 is going to be a minivan, it wouldn't be an F-150. If next 911 were front engined, it wouldn't be a 911. If the next Mustang were a sedan, it wouldn't be a Mustang. If the next S class were an SUV, it wouldn't be an S class.

They've fundamentally changed the car that's had the same formula for over 65 years. It's not the same car. And sure, if you squint, from some angles (the back, mostly), it looks vaguely Corvette-ish, it looks like a Corvette the way a Submariner looks like a Seamaster. That is to say that the basics are there, but I don't really see the resemblance.

It’s an interesting question, actually—where do you draw the line? When the 911 switched to water-cooled engines, many enthusiasts said it was no longer a 911.

I don’t have a dog in this fight, since I’ve never been interested in owning a Corvette (except for fantasies about a ‘67 Stingray convertible). But it does seem to me that Chevy has essentially reached the limits of what they could do performance-wise with the front engine rear drive design, so they had to change.

Kinda looks like a Ferrari F430 homage...

I thought the same from the side view. The rear though reminds me of a Camaro.

I agree they hit the limits of FR. I mean, the base C8 will hit 0-60 in basically the same time as the top of the line C8 for $40,000 less and 200+ fewer HP. Whether or not the envelope needed to be pushed any further is a different debate (I don't think it needed to be, on the road, anyway).

As for the 911, going from air cooled to water cooled did change something about the car, yes. It changed the sound and character of the engine, definitely. But it was still fundamentally the same car. This is on another level.

Like, I'm not 100% serious about it not being a Corvette. I mean, it's not a Corvette, because it's so radically different than any Corvette that's ever come before and it's nothing like any generation in its 65+ year history, but I'm not going to get fundamentalist about it. I think it'll be a winner on the market. As usual, I am mostly just lamenting that the market has moved on so far from what I value in a car. But I do think it's so different from what we've understood a Corvette to be that it's beyond a Ship of Theseus problem. If you replace every part of a ship and turn it into a plane, is it still the same ship?

Well, there's a reason for that:

    It's intended family resemblance.

But then again, the Camaro is terminal now, isn't it?

    Now this is a car:

"I've driven plenty of modern stuff. It's great, incredibly capable. The performance of the Ferrari 488, for example, is staggering. But to me, it’s not all about speed. It’s about driving experience," Segal says. "If you’re building a driver's car, it's gonna have a clutch and a manual transmission, or someone else can go and build it."
