Thread: Food

The carrot tops and the beet greens were both as lovely as the vegetables themselves, which isn't always the case here. Add to that mustard greens, spinach, tatsoi, Chinese cabbage and Italian parsley and we have both the requisite odd number of greens and the bare minimum of 5 has been exceeded. Rather than the traditional ham bone I used some leftover cured and smoked turkey. It was prettier the other night but it's tastier now. Gumbo z'herbes.

Speaking of food, the hotdog contest would kill me.

The body has an odd way of balancing out things, especially if you plan for it. To me, the more obvious challenge would be the carbs that would kill anyone with blood sugar disorders.

Not a thrilling photograph, but a very tasty meal of grilled chicken adobo on Spanish rice, with some garden cucumber and steamed brocoli.

Two weeks from now at an Italian restaurant that Mrs. K and I have been going to for more than 30 years. It looks to be a good meal.

    • Prosciutto Lucano, Soppressata, Capocollo, Bocconcini, Provolone Picante, Olive Verde
    A traditional Italian salumi board.

    • Zucchine Fritte, Peperoni Cruschi
    Fried Zucchini with Cruschi Peppers

    • Orecchiette con Salsa Rossa
A pasta popular in southern Italy. Served in a red sauce.

    • Pasta con Mollica di Pane
Breadcrumb pasta - the height of Italian simplicity.

    • Braciole di Vitello con Asparagi e Pomodori Verdi, Rossi
Veal chops with asparagus and green + red tomatoes.

    • Arrosto di Agnello con Patate Fritte
    Roast lamb with fried potatoes.

    • Peperoni Ripieni e Insalata Verde
    Stuffed peppers and green salad.

    • Crostoli della Nona
    Grandma's bread, served grilled.

    From lunch today:

Scallop crudo with passion fruit. Utterly delicious and a work of art.

Lunch yesterday was far less appealing to the eye, but was tasty and hearty as well. Speckwurst and bauernwurst with fries and curry ketchup (the only kind of ketchup I like, really).

Orecchiette with hot Italian sausage and broccoli raab. I made the sausage with a 50/50 pork shoulder and turkey thigh.

The rouge d'hiver romaine might be even nicer than the spinach was.
