Oh I know how to but its a lot of effort every 3 days (if I continue to commute as I l have been, 100 miles a day). I guess you're right about the cleaning part - chain oiler won't do that.

confidence in Bmw must now be at all time low -i read nearly 400,000 to be recalled in UK and staggering 700,000 in USA - lots of nasty incidents being reported of this total power down without warning issue

Yep. Pre 2011 models though so I'm safe.

When I have money again, I’m going to have to buy one of these and restore it to glory (and add a Viggen Rescue Kit if it doesn’t have it already):

Years and years ago, I drove one that was for sale and came very close to buying one, and I still have memories of how wonderful it felt. That one was tuned to about 290hp, and had such a midrange that when a Ferrari 360 made the mistake of filling my rear view mirror, I left it behind effortlessly in a third gear pull. There are very few cars that leave a lasting impression for years, and the 9-3 Viggen is one of them. I’ve driven dozens of different performance cars. I can’t really tell you what a 5 liter Mustang or a Mercedes S55 AMG or a Nissan 350Z felt like when I drove one for the first time, not anymore. But I can close my eyes and be back behind the wheel of that Viggen any time I want. On paper it wasn’t a winner. Hell, on the road it probably wasn’t a winner. But behind the wheel, the car just felt good and it made you feel good driving it. And isn’t that what driving is all about?

To the last line, yes. My polo was half as fast as my 328, but way more fun. I always read that fwd is bad and rwd is good buy both of our anecdotes here say otherwise.

Turns out I quite enjoy motorbike maintenance. I see a classic restoration in my future for sure. Need to get an oxy acetalyine welder, bead blaster and powder coating machine...
