Uncommon yes, weird no. Really no weirder than polenta, cream of wheat, Sonny Boy, Red River, oatmeal, or any other cooked grain/cereal.

I think just like polenta, the quality of the grits is dependent on how it's cooked and what is added.

True story: my mother collected red river box tops in secret and gave to me, as a gift, a red river sweatshirt they were giving away through a box top promotion. Such a dorky thing, but I was elated and wore it into tatters. Then I washed my first car with those tatters. I'm Scottish, I have a hard time throwing stuff out. Ideally I would have washed my car with those tatters until they were a shapeless mass, and then boiled that shapeless mass into a paste that I then ate for breakfast with cream and brown sugar. Circle of life.

A Red River mention...

Oh when you could redeem packaging for stuff. There used to be a motor hotel here that had a windmill in front of it. If you had enough Old Dutch chip bags you could be on televison on Saturday afternoons, in front of the motel, to trade them for swag.

Another year has passed and that can mean but one thing....




CRANBERRIES!!!!!
And just in time, I was down to my last few berries from last year's crop.

We have apparantly a noteworthy bog around here somewhere and I've always wanted to see it.

Our thanksgiving was a month ago and I still need a break from cranberries. I love them, but I make my sauce with aged cane syrup and decent ruby port. I don't like it on my turkey, etc (generally don't like to mix sweet and savoury) but I'll happily eat it as it's own dish.

Later, in private, after every one else goes to bed. Too good.
