Ah, I've thought of something else - 'tiny beating heart'. Maybe that could be added too.

I have a pretty even spread of mechanicals and quartz, and enjoy the benefits of both. I actually think that in many ways solar quartz is pretty unbeatable. But mechanical watches, especially manual winds but autos too, do have more soul. Is it the fact they need wearing or winding? Is it because they need adjusting more often? Is it because of the musical sound of them ticking away? I don't know, but they have "something" about them.

I prefer mechanicals, but I dig my Eco-drive beater for it's grab and go simplicity and ruggedness. I'll wear this today for my quartz brothers.

I had a conversation with a non-WIS friend about the difference between quartz and mechanical watches. After I explained the pros and cons of each he couldn't comprehend why mechanicals tend to be more expensive and sought after.

I prefer soul in my food over watches.

Old story, but perhaps some here have not seen it before. Apologies to those who have.

I have two autos and no winders, so occasionally I have to reset one of my watches if I haven't worn it for awhile. This happened to me some time ago. My husband and I had just arrived at church and I glanced down at my midsize Datejust, only to realize it was several hours off. Since I hadn't worn it in about 3 days, I wasn't unduly concerned. I pulled it off, asked my husband for the time, and started to set it.

He glanced at my USD $5000.00 watch, looked down at his $6.00 Wal-Mart quartz, and, well, you guessed it. I let him go on for a while about value and function, yada, yada, yada. We've had similar conversations about my shoes so I'm kinda used to it.

Anyway, I then explained that my watch is an automatically wound mechanical and his runs off a battery. I purposely didn't use the words "cheap" or "soul-less."

I was patient. I was polite. He is, after all, the love of my life. My partner. My soulmate.

He's also a philistine, with no appreciation of the finer things in life (except, of course, when it comes to women).

I told him that his watch would run without him. That it would run lying in the back of a dark drawer with the same cold efficiency it exhibited on his wrist. That it didn't need him.

My mechanical on the other hand, has a symbiotic relationship with me. It requires interaction with its human companion in order to function. It has no life without me.

I was proud to see the light dawn in his eyes. Yes! He understood! Perhaps there was hope for him yet. Now, about the shoes...

    And then...

"I get it," he said. "It's like a tapeworm."

My eco drives are tools. My Glycine is a precision instrument. Neither has soul, but mechanical movements are more interesting to me. It's not logical to prefer one over the other, but i still do.

no correlation with this thread but co- incidentally picked up this blacked out Skyhawk today -told myself it 'wouldn't frighten the trout ' but that was an excuse i think - it joins three other eco drives i enjoy to have -i place it here because fortunately there is no 'dislike' button available -guess i am shamelessly 'soulless'Name: blackhawkxx copy.jpg

For me a spring drive might be the best of both worlds, but alas they are out of my price range.
