When these are closer to 500 miles I'll start to consider them real cars. I look at it that if I'm on the fringe of mileage just to go see my brother in Orlando (228 miles) I would never feel safe driving it there. A 5 mile buffer is just not enough. Locally we are good candidates for electric vehicles since we drive very little if any on week days and stores and restaurants are close. I will just not have something that I need to designate my trip car, and my in town car. Having driven a few Tesla, nothing about them feels worth a six figure price tag. We'll see when the smaller one comes out. These numbers look very inflated compared to the Real Milage figures the magazines have published.

When I had my 2007 Mercedes D320 it would go over 800 miles on a tank of fuel. That is what I call a trip car.

Not to mention the even bigger issue, which is the amount of time to recharge vs. the five minutes it takes to refuel a conventional car, even from a "fast" recharging station.

Diesels here are starting to pick up momentum. My local Jaguar dealer is selling 3-1 diesel F-Pace SUV (Their number one model) here is south Florida. One of my doctors said that during the Hurricane when you could not buy gas he could go right up and buy diesel fuel.

I'd have another since this was my favorite part about the E Class we had. Not a ton of HP, but off the chart torque.

It is a real shame that fuel cell vehicles are so restricted to just a few cities in the US. The other thing that makes sense here in the US is a move from gas to propane. You can run a propane vehicle (Fork truck) inside a building and all you get is heat and some water when it burns. Just like alcohol it has only about 60% of the energy of gasoline. Cars can be easily converted to run propane (All the busses and garbage trucks here use it).

Musk(Tesla) a few years ago talked about having a quick change battery that could be swapped out for a charged one in the time it takes to fuel a normal car. I did not see how this could be economical, and that the idea sort of disappeared about a year later from their plan seems to indicate they pulled this out of their butt with no real thought. To me electrical vehicles only make sense if the battery is only to get it to a energized grid that powers the vehicle, and charges the battery. Just like horses and cars the two probably cannot exist in volume on the same roads .

Musk(Tesla) talked about an electric Semi which does make sense. There is plenty of space to fit the needed batteries for something like this to have it go a great distance and have the needed torque. Getting trucks which do not in most states have to meet the same clean air requirements off the road in favor of this makes a bit more sense.

I can't say they are really committed to this direction with a 2040 date. Cold Fusion could power cars by then. Just think about what did not exist just 20 years ago?

Get it, girl! I kind of want to, too. Especially if my brother and I split an SUV.

That's the biggest issue. Range is already there for most of them. Being able to charge quickly, even just to 80%, should help with more people seeing them as primary or only vehicles.

What didn't exist 20yrs ago with regards to automobile propulsion? Fuel cells? I don't know their history. Electric and hybrid gas/electric have been around much longer than 20yrs.
