I drove my brother's old S4 today. Went out to the suburbs to do some big box store shopping. I could have done most of it in the Z4, but it was easier in the Audi. It's so strange, being walled off from the whole world. It doesn't even feel like driving. And this is the highly rated sport version of a car. The DSG just feels like any automatic, the variable steering rack weighted up unpredictably at times, the pedals felt light compared to the BMW. And the fixed roof. It was like magic acceleration. With music playing even at moderate volume, the engine was basically unable to be heard except at WOT. His S5 is so much better.
I also think I figured out why there's so much road rage. I found that I was more easily annoyed by people on the road in the S4. I was more aggressive when it came to making tight passes and quick lane changes. You really feel the psychological phenomenon where you disconnect cars from the humans inside them. I also feel that drivers are more considerate to me in the BMW, I think because they can see me. It feels more social. Driving a convertible is like having a welcome mat at your front door. People feel free to chat with you, it's much more sociable; it's like having a car that's a public Instagram account.
I'm beginning to question my two car solution. Will driving an SUV be even more disconnected?
EDIT: Went off on a tangent. I was going to say that my brother can't drive my car and won't drive it. (1) He doesn't know how to drive stick and (2) he's a bit afraid of being is such a small, low slung convertible, especially on the highway.

Lisa does not have any issue driving the F Type. She knows how to put it in quite mode and switch off Dynamic mode. In all the cars her seat setting is 1 and mine is 3. I won't have cars we both can't drive. We had that situation a few years ago and it started to be a real PITA( The Mountain Edition Jeep Wrangler Unlimited even with the seat all the way up she could not push in the clutch). Never again.
Totally jealous you have a four car garage. If I have my way at the lake house it will be six, and a shop.

As I've indicated above, my wife would never drive my car - too big, too complicated - and paradoxically, too automated. She won't even drive with the radio on.
She wants a small car with manual everything, with the exception of air-con and electric windows.
I'm a big bloke with a dodgy back and a left leg that doesn't entirely work, so need a biggish auto. She couldn't drive any car that was right for me, and I wouldn't want to drive any car that was right for her for more than ten miles.
She's also reluctant to drive on 'big', fast or unfamiliar roads. We're in different worlds, as far as cars are concerned. I honestly don't know how she'll cope if one day I'm not around anymore, especially as we live in the country. It worries me if I think about it.
