If that's the alternative, then I wholeheartedly endorse the 2L diesel.
It's funny, when I did a similar commute, I did it in both my 1.8T Passat and 2.0T Jetta, both of which got around 28-32mpg (33.6-38mpg UK), and I was more than happy with that. But I guess gas is cheaper here, by a considerable amount.
Did you look at a difference in payments and/or transaction costs when considering the gas savings? It's rudimentary, I know, but you'd be surprised how many people take on an increased car payment to save money in gas and see their overall expenditure stay either the same or in some cases increase.

The amount of money you must be losing keep chopping cars !?, you'd be better trying to hire one (or get a long term/weekend testdrive) , you'd save so much money and might get to the right choice of car sooner.......

Yeah I'm working to a budget of £15k which is what my car is worth so no more expense - just fuel savings. I'm looking preowned. Ever driven an electric car? I shall tomorrow.
Cost of business innit. The only reason I'm considering changing now is the new job an extra 90 miles a day commute.
4 seats and 4 doors needed.
The gtd was on my original shortlist.
Not entirely true; however "unhappy wife, unhappy life", is.

I've driven a golf cart and when I was a young lad, I had a Power Wheels Jeep. Same idea as an electric car.
