I'm a bit sad and like to see a decent mpg return (though I have a heavy foot and don't adjust to help matters). Getting good mpg is like dieting - losing weight is such long, hard work, then putting it back on is so easy! You can drive well for 50 miles and get 40mpg then gun it for 1 mile and you're down to 30. Sigh

...of course, now that I've bought a old car, another one that I would love just came up for sale.

A neighbor just put his 1976 Mercedes 280C four seat coupe in his yard with a for sale sign!
I've always loved this body.

It's exactly like this silver car. Unfortunately, it has the American bumpers and headlights, but I still love it.
The car comes with a mildly interesting provenance, it was purchased new in L.A. by Mr. John Dodds, publisher and husband to Ms. Vivian Vance. (10 points if you know her without googling)

It's original and would need a new carb (I'd go Webber) and a new a/c compressor. Other than that, it's good to go.

It's mighty tempting and I still have the Continental for sale.

Yep, and the car's a dog. 0-60 in 26 minutes. Can take an exit ramp at 9 mph! All while achieving 16 mpg. One of the most anemic big Benzs ever.
But solid lux in its time.

I drove my mom's car to pick up my watch today. It's a CLS550, a couple years old, but I think it's still the current generation. My god, that thing is so damn fast. I love that I have to work for performance in my car and that if I get it wrong I'm penalized--it makes you feel more at one with the car, more driver than passenger, in my opinion--but even on my best day, I could not come anywhere near to this car. It hits 60 in like 4.1 seconds, based on a test I saw in C&D a couple years back (MB says, generally conservatively, 4.9, which is still much quicker than my car, which is, probably, generously, 5.6-5.7 to 60). I had to work hard not to open it up with my mother in the car!

And it actually drives pretty well. Taut suspension, responsive handling, decent steering. Feels more like a BMW than any Mercedes I've ever driven.

Interesting to see this car with steel wheels and wheel discs. In SA the CE250 and CE280 only came on mag wheels.

I agree that it is some of Paul Bracq's best work. I had a landlord that did consulting for Mercedes and was a huge fan. He told me that the original design sketches showed a more rounded 'C' pillar but BMW objected as it was too similar to the distinctive 'C' pillar shape Bracq designed for them and that they maintain in their cars right up to today.

I had the four door W114 - easily the most attractive car I have ever owned. It shared it's independent suspension with the R107 and was a joy to drive.

Yesterday the feature I used most was the ventilated seats. I actually don't know if her car has the massaging seats. My brother's S5 Sportback does, but I haven't quite figured out how to use them properly.
