You want stiff sidewalls for handling. Stiff sidewalls increase the spring rate of the tire which helps with weight transfer during corning. Stiff sidewalls hurt grip during acceleration and braking though which is why in drag racing you see the tires do this.

Yes, to a certain point. But after that point, additional stiffness means less contact patch on the ground as you're cornering, no?

As others have mentioned, swap to non run flats. It's likely that a 19" standard tire will be more comfortable than an 18" runflat.

My wife's BMW 650i convertible came with runflat 19s. Traction and ride were very poor. Swapping to an all season non-runflat in 19s was a huge improvement in every way. Ride, handling and wear.

Will do. I'll see if someone has rims that I can swap. Or I'll buy theirs and sell mine. Got a quote for tinting the back windows - £240. Those are 2 imminent upgrades. When I find some spare cash...

Don't rule out smaller wheels with taller tyres. It might be the most effective solution.

tint set will cost maybe 15/20£ Geoff-can do it yourself but not on a windyday!!remember also if you tint the back - reversing becomes a little more interesting because you cannot see out

Good points. I hear doing a tint job isn't a walk in the park though
