I would recommend, a medium-to-large capacity upright, naked bike. Very comfortable, very easy to handle, good for commuting and you can add a windscreen later on if you plan on doing more miles. A second hand one obviously is best to start on to see if you like it (and in case you drop it). Go have a look at the CB1300, XJR1300, ZRX1200, GSX1400, (W800 or CB1100 if you like that style), maybe some Triumphs which I don't know much about....I know these engines all seem large, but (except the retros which are pretty slow) they're all incredibly lazy at regular speeds and only really take off when you demand it. They also hold their value well and are incredibly cheap.

If you're learning to ride, a lighter, smaller bike can make it easier. Less of a learning curve and you don't have to worry about whacking the throttle open and have bad things happen. Braking, slower maneuvers and emergency/evasive actions are easier until you get some reps under your belt, too.

70s fashion was horrendous. Look at the icon we had from the 1960s:

If you look at today's style, a lot of it has been drawn from the slimmer, simpler fashion from the 1960s. I would say the kinds of clothes that McQueen wore would be appropriate in any era, regardless of fads.

Yeh its a bit of a pain you have to have a provisional licence for 6 months before you can do the test.

In the US, stupidly, the MkVII Golf R is not available with a sunroof. But the MkVI was. It's got less power, but plenty still.
