I started teaching myself mycology about 22 years ago, and many hundreds of mushroom dinners since then, I have not yet made anyone sick. It's true you need to do your homework, and it's true you can kill yourself if you make a stupid mistake, but it really isn't that hard to be careful. It's a basic skill our ancestors all knew. Just be alert and teach yourself the antidotes of "confirmation bias" (which is a useful skill in other fields of life, for sure.)
Too many watches, not enough wrists.

Bear Grylls says not to pick mushrooms in a survival situation because it's safer that way, and I trust him.

But what if you chase them with your own piss?
It is now my duty to completely drain you.

This pertains to curing meats and fish too. I have never made anyone sick. While one can kill people, a little common sense and a little science and no one gets hurt. Lets face it- it is theoretically possible to kill people canning tomatoes too.

That's because he's guiding novices and home TV viewers who won't have time to learn basic identification skills. It's true that one should always cook a mushroom (that actually applies to store-bought agaricus bosporus as well) so if you are in a survival situation without fire, best not to eat them raw.

Bad pic, but the steamed buns with braised chuck, pickled onions, scallions and red cabbage slaw (not pictured) turned out awesome..

Peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake equally scrumptious
