    RNTM 336/16

ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINE SERVICE LIMITED EDITION WATCH

    07 Nov 16

    Aim

    1. The aim of this RNTM is to promulgate arrangements for serving and former submariners to express their interest in purchasing a limited edition Royal Navy Submarine Service Watch.

    Introduction

    2. Rear Admiral Submarines, Rear Admiral John Weale OBE, is particularly keen to promote the ethos of submariners, serving and retired, and has given his permission kindly for the production and sale of this limited edition watch, sold exclusively to those who have qualified SM.

    3. Permission for the use of the RN Dolphins insignia has been licenced in principle to Elliot Brown (EB) by the MoD, for the sole purpose of this initiative. It is anticipated that qualified submariners will wear this watch daily with pride, but especially at auspicious Gatherings such as the Annual Submarine memorial in London (November each year), and the Annual Submarine ‘Gambit’ Dinner (March each year).

    4. The six tenets of the Ethos are embodied in this exquisite timepiece. It is made to standards of Absolute Professionalism, it demonstrates Adaptability in that it has different straps, its design reinforces our Responsibility to ourselves and our shipmates, it proclaims our Unity of purpose, and the effort expended to qualify, it links us to our Heritage, by being available to all those who have worn the Dolphins insignia, and accordingly it support our enduring sense of Humour, identity and morale under harsh conditions of service.

    The Company

    5. Elliot Brown was founded by Ian Elliot and Alex Brown, who learned their trade making sports watches at Animal, the UK’s best-known active sports brand best known for developing the Velcro watchstrap. Having introduced stainless steel watches to the UK active sports watch market in 1994, ‘Animal watches’ went on to become trusted favourites of surfers, athletes, and the military the world over.

    6. Being intimately involved with both the technical design stages and aftersales service and repair enabled them to follow their watches from the drawing board right through to seeing them for returned for service and repair many years later, providing them with valuable feedback on how their watches had fared over time.

    7. Twenty years of this in-depth knowledge of how sports watches performed when used in saltwater, snow, and sand enabled them to bring a wealth of hard-won technical expertise to Elliot Brown, which was established in 2013 to make beautifully designed highly robust watches for everyday wear.

    8. Since then, Elliot Brown has gone from strength to strength, sponsoring the Clipper Round the World Race, producing a watch for Mountain Rescue England and Wales, and a limited edition watch for members of the Special Boat Service Association, their neighbours in Poole. Sales of both these watches led to Elliot Brown donating charitable sums per watch to their respective charities.

The Watch – two versions are proposed:

    9. Grey with skull & crossbones; photos 1 & 2 attached

    10. Blue with Submarine Dolphins; photos 3 & 4 attached

    11. Each watch design will share the common back plate, photo 5 attached

    12. The proposed Submarine Service watch would be based on Elliot Brown’s ‘Canford’ model. Made from 316L Austenitic Stainless Steel, it features an internal timing bezel, interchangeable straps including nylon webbing, steel, and rubber, and a 5-year battery. Every watch is inherently shock-resistant, and every watch has been pressure-tested in water to 200m/20ATM before being passed for sale.

    13. Both designs feature hour markers around the very edge of the dial picked out in green, yellow, and red, reminiscent of the coloured segments of a snorting barometer.

    14. The Submarine Service watch will be supplied on a custom designed rubber strap in either dark blue or black, with an alternative NATO-style webbing strap also included in the presentation box. All EB straps can also be fitted after purchase, including heavy duty metal bracelets and leather straps.

    15. The model will not be available commercially; it will only ever be made available to members of the Submarine Service. There is provision on each watch for personal details, up to 16 Characters – it has been decided that this will include the Service Number of each person to whom a watch is sold; this will limit the chance of theft but more importantly limit the chance for profiteering through third-party sales online.

    16. The Command Warrant Officer SM has a prototype available for viewing and he will take it with him on his visits to submarines and establishments, formal gatherings and Submarine events. Former Submariners will be made aware via FaceBook and other social networks.

    Payment, and charitable contributions

    17. Each watch costs £400; this is orders of magnitude less than previous limited edition watches, and has been chosen specifically to be within reach of every qualified and former submariner, regardless of rank, rate, or to some extent, means. For the sale of each watch a £50 donation will be made by Elliot Brown to a charitable fund managed by ACNS SM supporting the wider SM Community.

    18. When the level of interest has been determined, EB will create an order page on their website, only visible to members of the Submarine Service, where orders can be placed. This will include the choice of watch, billing address, delivery address if different, and the engraving required.

    19. Payment is to be made directly to EB, who will collate and distribute the order; note that staged payments are available to those who wish to avail themselves of such a service. At a later date, lumped payments will be made to the charity and details will be passed to CWO SM for onward circulation.

    20. At this stage, this RNTM is just to establish the level of interest. Details collated by EB will be retained under the strictest confidence, will not be passed to third parties and will not be used for onward marketing. If the project does not go forward then the data collated will be destroyed.

    Delivery

    21. In order to activate this project, Elliot Brown will need to place an order with their factory for a minimum of 300 watches, per design, to satisfy the minimum order quantities for the custom dials and case-backs. If orders for 300 watches cannot be met, then the project cannot proceed.

    22. Production is anticipated to commence after the final orders have been taken personally by Alex Brown at the Annual Submarine Gambit Dinner in March 2017; delivery will take place as soon as possible after the production run has completed; typically 120 days, meaning delivery will be around July or August 2017. However, if sufficient interest is received ahead of that, then production can begin much earlier.

    23. The success of this initiative pivots on gaining sufficient interest from the community, so all those interested are strongly encouraged to commit now, safe in the knowledge that all monies will be returned if the project is not viable. All those who have ordered watches will be kept apprised personally by EB.

why not have two bit steep but if £50 goes from each watch to a good charity relating to sailors why not don't think it will every be worth a fortune but if it tickles your fancy why not you deserve it

I know. I am not sold on it. If it was an automatic I might be more tempted but it is a lot of money for a quartz.
