    Me pretending to eat a sandwich while my mother pretends to pour tea. The photographer from the local newspaper wanted an action-packed shot.

    This was hop-picking, circa 1964. Seasonal work to boost the family income.

    That's Mrs French and her children on the left. One family picked in each end of the hessian bin, which was picked up and moved down the row as you picked. Your clothes became impregnated with the hops and your fingers turned green.

    Worryingly, photos like this now appear in books depicting bygone rural life...

    Well, it is rural, and it is a bit "bygone" innit?

    great putting faces to the names ! this was me early 90's or so with my eldest son Danny -and the both of us again 10years ago -one of my life's best days when he was presented with his green beret - i had forgotten that i wore a gold day date at that time -was not a WIS and had little knowledge or real interest in watches - Name:  DAD __dan(2).jpg
