I've found, through test driving with my kids, that there is a huge difference in CVTs. For example, the one in my son's Impreza isn't so horrible; however, the ones I've had in Nissans were wretched--it was like driving a sewing machine. Ugh. None of them can match a decent manual or even a conventional automatic, though.

Seriously though there are crash test that you can look at which and the XC90 did well in them. And it is a Volvo so it will probably run forever.

The CVT in the Outback is the best I've experienced and better than most automatics for that matter. It's nearly impossible to tell that it is a CVT. It is significantly better than the CVT in our Accord Hybrid.
I do miss shifting gears in my old BMW, but for the typical driving I do these days, I'm more than pleased with the Outback. Adaptive cruise control is one of the best things ever when you are stuck in stop and go traffic on the turnpike.

We are really enjoying the Accord Hybrid. My wife's commute racks up about 20,000 miles a year, so we were looking for a relatively efficient car. When we bought it, I was hoping to get a TDI, but my wife didn't like the idea of a diesel and the Accord Hybrid had just been released. We test drove it and that was it. It's a comfortable car and the mileage has been excellent. I believe we are averaging around 45 mpg over the past two years. I drove it 20 miles to work the other day and the computer was showing 57 mpg.
It's a comfortable car and the power is decent. My wife had one of the original Civic Hybrids and I had a Prius back when I was commuting a ridiculous distance. The Accord is a huge step forward in power and comfort compared to those. The CVT is a bit rubbery at times, but as a commuter car, that isn't a big deal.
The biggest complaint we have is the miniscule trunk space. Coming from an A3, that might be the toughest adjustment to make. That is the main reason we went with the Outback for the family car. I'm not a SUV person and there are so few wagons offered in the US these days.
