Jamie Lannister brought it up on the Daily Show last night, and it got cheers. People in the US were watching.

I disagree. Nottingham Forest were a big team back then. They bought the first £1m player, Trevor Francis, from Birmingham City and were certainly one of the bigger teams of that era. Man Utd were in a real dip at that point, until Ron Atkinson went there from West Brom and took Bryan Robson et al with him.

I think top goes to Celtic in 1967 for winning the European cup when all the players lived within 30 miles of each other, got away from work early that day to watch it even my mother watched it and saw a smile on her face that night

Still say this is bigger than the others listed here.
The whole game is different now and with the money the big clubs have, it shouldn't be possible to do this over 38 games. I think that's the amazing part. It's not a cup with a limited number of games, it's a whole season.

I'm with you Magnus. I fear we will never see the like again.

its interesting that the bookies are not going to be stung again so quickly -the days of 5000/1 may be over -
season 2016/17 shows Leicester at roughly 25/1 next time whereas newcomers Burnley who are most likely to go down again at only 1000/1 - other similarly priced no hopers are Watford , West Brom and Bournemouth

It was only the season after being promoted from Division Two that they won the European Cup!
1976-77 - Promotion from 2nd Division (finishing 3rd)
1977-78 - Division 1 Champions
1978-79 - European Cup Winners
1979-80 - European Cup Winners
