    Thanks for this thread, Henry, I feel much more educated now. You can definitely see the "Rado-ishness" in the designs. That 1624-2 is particularly cool.

    BTW, I'll bet you that the wood on your wife's eldest LR is ebony, which is black in color, very densely grained and super hard. It is (along with rosewood and maple) one of the most favored fretboard materials for guitar.

    I suspect you are correct. Ebony was my first thought too. I have a friend who is a luthier and it very much reminded me of some of the wood he has used

    It's my favorite fretboard material, followed by rosewood, then maple.

    Do you build them as well as play, or is that an aesthetic preference?

    Heavens, no. I'm not allowed to have sharp objects. It's a preference based on playability and tone, depending on the guitar. For example, I have a maple necked Strat that sounds quite different from my rosewood fretboard Strat, and plays differently, too.
