Much easier to work to fatigue without having to use massive amounts of weight, and more dependent on strict form. Me likey.

To be honest, It's how I've trained for a long time only now the reps are higher as I don't want to build muscle mass any more.

Did my first 50 minute spin class last Sunday. Really, really tough. Great work out. It'll certainly help with all the cycling I'm going to do in the spring / summer / fall.

Tweaked my left arm curling that evening, though. So I'm taking a hiatus from weights for a couple days. Will likely hit the gym up this evening.

I now much prefer dumbell press to bench press. Any difference?

Dumbell presses focus on more specific muscle areas whereas bench press is more for overall upper body strength. They both have their place IMO, and I alternate between them to keep my body guessing.

Dumbbells force you to use your stabilizing muscles more, which is a good thing, and they force both sides of your body to pull their own weight. Nearly everyone is stronger with their dominate hand so I always train my weaker side first so my dominate side isn't getting more reps than the other side can handle.

Yeah a bit of reading suggests they're better for hypertrophy whereas bench is better for strength. I'll do a bit of both.

Did another 50 min. Spin class today. Still amazed at how hard they work you. Never really considered it 'serious' exercise until now.

Followed that up with a fairly long hike in our nearby National park. Talking about functional fitness and training - doing 13 km of ice covered hills is right up there in terms of taking it out of you. Especially when you do it in less than 2.5 hours. Also saw a couple bison on the hike. Fortunately they were a couple hundred meters away...
