I don't even think it is that. I can't help but think most of the supercars being built right now and going to look very dated in a couple years.

    The rest I agree with.

I am not a huge fan of the new Mustang styling by any means but I would gladly get over that for the sound of GT350R. Pretty much the best sounding car on the market right now.

I'm not so sure. I think it depends if they replace it with a newer model - that's usually what makes cars look dated. But I wonder...

Dated or not? My opinion below:

    Murcielago - no
    Countache - yes
    67 mustang - no
    Maclaren f1 - undecided
    Mercedes slr - no
    Carerra gt - no
    Ferrari f40 and f50 - yes
    Ferrari 360 - undecided

The 360 and 430 still look as sharp and modern as ever. The 458 and 488, which were ugly to begin with, will date quickly.

The Murcielago and Gallardo will always look fresh; those designs are something special.

However, the 67 Mustang is absolutely dated. But remember, dated isn't always a bad thing. A good design is a good design, even if it is distinctly part of a time period.

I use dated here pejoratively. I'm not sure it can be good?

    I saw a 360 today in a showroom actually.

F40 no way! It is pretty much the most prefect supercar ever including looks.

But the rest I agree with.

The E-Type is kinda of the classic example. It is definitely built in the '60s but the styling is timeless. The '80s Countache with the big wings and the like may have been the bedroom poster of lots of kids but now it looks like it came from the '80s and I don't mean that in the good way.

I think the McLaren MP random numbers, the Ferrari 458, Nissan GTR, Acura NSX will all be the '80s Countache not the E-Type in a few years.

That all being said there are plenty of what I consider dated looking cars I'd gladly own (Ferrari 308, 388 GTO are the first things to come to mind).

Well, while it's often used as an insult, there are so few timeless designs that pretty much everything is dated. I think of it as this: if you pluck that car out of time and put it in a different era in the future, will it stick out? By that standard, pretty much every design is dated, even drop dead gorgeous ones. Take the E39 M5; put it in today's era, and it will look very strange. Anemic front end that's too low compared to today's cars, the beltline is low, there's a lot of glass, the car wastes a lot of space (the interior is similar in size to today's 3 series), there are no weird surfaces, the headlamps aren't the size of the entire car, et al. Put a 67 Mustang next to modern cars, and it will definitely stick out.

But you put that E39 M5 or '67 Mustang next to a modern car and it is still a damn good looking car.

For me, dated styling on a car is styling that I wouldn't buy if it is was a new car. Basically if Ford made an exact look like of a '67 Mustang new I'd love to buy it but if Ferrari made an exact replica of the 308 I wouldn't. It is kind of hard to explain what I mean. I mean the 308 is a good looking car but it definitely looks like it is from the late '70s and I don't mean that in a good way. The '67 Mustang is a good looking car that looks like it is from the late '60s but that isn't a bad thing in it's case.
