I am the same but I also have never bought a car for myself from this century...

i'm the same - i think in all over 50years driving i have only bought one car from new [and that was the first mini cooper ] always preferred that previous owners would take the depreciating hits -

you can get tax breaks with buying cars with low emission numbers. and some company cars/leasings have to be below a certain number. so it can be very important nowadays.

That's exactly how it works for me. I have a CO2 allowance and get back £1 per month per g, I think, under that and pay £1 per month for every g over.
My current car, a VW Tiguan gets me £1 per month back but the new one, a VW Passat, will get me £18 per month despite the engine being more powerful.
Sadly, the revised Tiguan with the new engine isn't due out until next year.
