Thread: Food

  1. #2711
I'm quite glad to have some proof to back up my theory that all this stuff about regulating "treats" while dieting is a load of BS that just makes you obsessed with food and what you're not eating.

I worked out a healthy perfectly enjoyable regime which I thought would get my weight drifting downward and got on with it, got myself used to it. And once my body had adjusted its expectations as to what it was getting each day, it didn't grumble neither. (I suspect this is more easily acheived when you're living on your own)

I'm not - it's mostly muscle, which the calculator ignores (the clue being in the title).

Ha! I do think it's a simple calories in calories out regardless of whether they're decreased by exercise or diet, but hey the multi billion dollar diet and fitness industry thinks it's more complex.

By and large, that is correct. However, not everyone's body burns calories the same. Some of that can be adjusted by building muscle mass and exercising regularly, but some of it is outside your control. There is a reason post menopausal women are advised to lower caloric intake. Their bodies burn calories more slowly, due (I assume) to lowered hormone levels. Menopause is absolutely a game changer when it comes to weight as well as overall physical conditioning.

Men in general burn calories more readily than women do. This is a biological thing caused by testosterone's role in building muscle.

Also the body can secrete hormones such as the "stress hormone" cortisol that can stimulate appetite and make it harder to control eating.

And, of course, there are physical conditions such as hypothyroidism that affect the bodies ability to lose weight.

Oh for sure - my mate does no exercise, eats like a pig and is skinny. If he wants to put on weight he will just have to eat more still.
