I remain unconvinced by Clyne. I suppose time will tell.

Well he is an upgrade on who you have and he is one of the best right backs in the Premier League so I'd say he is a good signing. He is also a back who focuses on defending first going forward second. Still if Liverpool doesn't bring in a defensive midfielder then the defense is going to be exposed no matter who they bring in.

I don't think that's really true. They aren't making players worse. They just aren't buying intelligently given that the manager has a pretty clear and specific style.
Lovren didn't get worse at Liverpool. He just got exposed. Lambert wasn't quick at Southampton and Liverpool didn't make him another year older.
Whoever gets Balotelli will have perfectly good player for a particular type of attack. They just need to be realistic about the fact that he has long ago learned the last thing he is ever going to learn.
The imminent Benteke signing might be a sign that the transfer committee suffer from the same thing.
The imminent
I agree but he still isn't exactly what we need. We aren't set up for a big physical target man. We need nimble, technical players who can accelerate into spaces and be difficult for defenders to track.
It feels like we're trying to prove that buying Balotelli wasn't a mistake. It's just that he let them down. The Benteke move seems like someone is trying to get Balotelli right.
What doesn't make sense is that, in a world where rumors are 90% guesses and outright lies, there hasn't been much, if any talk, of Balotelli leaving. So if we have Balotelli, why do we need another Balotelli? We already have him.
And even with Balotelli's poor form last season, I'd much rather have him than Benteke. For much of the season, Benteke looked unmotivated and uninterested. Balotelli, while getting stick for the same, at least had flashes where he showed his fire and want. Benteke got better results, yes. By we may well be at his ceiling, and I think another year and a little showing of confidence will get us the Balotelli we thought we were getting.
